Objectives:
To: (1) increase the intellectual capacity and proficiency of future scientists and engineers in disciplines critical to defense; and (2) to increase the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) qualified individuals in the DoD workforce.

(Project Grants (Fellowships)) FY 09 $32,625,000; FY 10 est $37,300,000; FY 11 est $50,000,000
Uses and Use Restrictions:
Awards are made to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in a DoD-relevant STEM field, who must be U.S. citizens and enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning, e.g., university, college, etc. Specified in application.

Average annual award is approximately $70,000. Awards can vary due to differences in educational level and tuition.

Applicant Eligibility:
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and U.S. citizens. Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a DoD-relevant STEM field. Applicants participate in internships at DoD laboratories. Participants will be required to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance. Upon completion of their degree, applicants are expected to work full-time for the DoD.

Beneficiaries are undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a DoD-relevant STEM field.
Award Procedure:
Award decisions will be based on a competitive selection process.
